Share To Create Meeting with Dubber

marcreck » 24 January 2009 » In ShareToCreate » No Comments

I had a great meeting with the ever inspirational Dubber today about our share to create proposal. What was great about the meeting was not only that we know have a beautifully expressed elevator pitch, and a better way of approaching the project, but also that Dubber advised that our project was much more like a £100, 000 project than a £10, 000, advising that seed fund should be  initially applied, with the development fund as part of the 2nd phase.

I have a lot of respect for Dubber, and find our meetings to move things forward in the way that you need them to, which in contrast to a few meetings that have happened over the last couple of months, is actually a pretty rare thing. Maybe i’m buzzing from the meeting, but after working for so long on this idea that we all believe in so much, and to know have the team in place to make it into a reality, to have a meeting like that was just what we needed.

There’s actually two more meetings that need to happen before we can move it forward into the 4ip realms, as we have a new member on board, which is exciting, but also frustrating in a way, as i anticipate that this has the potential to slow things down, just at the point of things happening. Building a team in this situation though requires everyone being up to speed and having their input at the base core planning stage, (as the roles are so integral and different for each person) so in the long term i think its going to be time well spen.

Sincerely hope to be reporting back on this project (with something less mysterious!) over the next few months, as i’ve just heard from our designer that the final designs are almost complete!

January Breaks Charts 2009

marcreck » 20 January 2009 » In Charts, Djing » No Comments

To kick us of this year on the Night Time’s chartage front, i thought i’d share the 5 classic breaks tunes in my record box, that are pretty much guaranteed to set any big room breaks venue right off. These are not new, but they are big phat crowd pleasing breakbeat stonkers!

I’ll post the clipping when i find a copy btw as its been out since xmas

No GoodCut & Run – An absolutely massive remix of the Prodigy’s “No Good” that always gets everyone up and jumping around. This never fails… (so much so i have been told off for playing it…again :)

Fasten Your SeatbeltsPendulum vs Freestylers – Another sure fire crowd pleaser, and one which slots into pretty much any set with it’s bouncy ska fulled break, and hands in the air breakdown. Everyone knows and likes it, and probably another one i really shouldn’t play so much :)

When i was a youtEd Solo & Skool of Thought – A classic reggae tune magically turned into a dirty breaks banger. Everyone loves the vocal, and the drop seems to be heavy enough to satisfy the most underground of dancefloors, whilst the reggae stylings ensure it’s not too heavy for everybody else.

Boom BlastThe Freestylers – I’ve been playing this for almost 5 years now, and i’ve never tired of it. An awesome vocal (from their Mc Million Dan), and a proper bass tearin rhythm, coupled with some dramatic strings and a huge drop, ensure that this track really is enough to set off any dancefloor!

King Of The BongoCut & Run – And last but not least the other track i generally always take to the underground clubs is this stunning piece of heavy breaks. When it kicks the room explodes, and pretty much always generates vocal response from young and old.

It’s business

marcreck » 16 January 2009 » In Bloglife, ShareToCreate » No Comments

I went to check out some office space in the custard factory just before xmas, after recieving a flyer through the door offering free office space. I think the free space refers to a small workshop, so we looked at something more suitable, alongside a couple of interesting meetings with Dave Peebles and Jonathan Goodwin. I learnt a lot about what they are looking to do and seems that the Share to Create project could be a good potential partnership. There’s a fair bit that needs to happen before we’d need or even can afford these premises, but as there are potentially good mutual benefits, it looks like a good path to follow, funding allowing.

Here’s the office space at the custard, which this one was two offices into one, in their new 24 hours access block.

I’m currently on New Deal for Musicians, with the view to getting some support in my business plan/project proposals, and making all the elements create income amongst other things. Having no income in order to employ people is a common issue for people starting out, and on New Deal it’s great that people like the inspirational John Mostyn, (one of the hosts of the provision), can offer his support and advice through the role.

Until i hear back about the submitted proposal, i have just had a meeting with another provision called creative launchpad. They gave me some useful information and spreadsheets, which were aimed at new creative businesses, and they invited me to come back after i’d heard back about the proposals and business plans. I have a meeting booked with Dubber next week as part of the transfer of knowledge fellowship, (which is know will be useful), so fingers crossed things will move forward with the other two provisions, and not become tied up in this red tape that i keep hearing mentioned.

Getting Organised in 2009

marcreck » 08 January 2009 » In Bloglife, Promoting Tutorials » No Comments

Staying on top of everything can be hard work and leave little time to spend on the things you’re really interested in. The more stuff you get involved in, the greater the need for a suitable custom made system of dealing with it. Something i’ve worked on a lot over the years, and this last few months, i’ve taken time out to pool everything i’ve tried into something that i’m hoping will allow me a lot more time to do.

It’s an evolving thing and in the early stages, but for the moment, here is what i used and an overview of what i did, in case anyone else is in a similar dingy :)

Thailand

Outlook
I’ve resisted this program for years, but it seems to be the only thing that will sync my calender, contacts, and email accounts with my new phone. Before outlook i tried Sunbird and Thunderbird (when they were first out), then exclusively just gmail and google calender, but the time has come to have it all one place, and here’s why.

I wanted a central contacts database which could deal with the 10/15+ areas of contact details effectively.

I wanted a calender that synced with my phone and thinking rock, and one that i didn’t have to go online to look at.

And the other main area was that I wanted all my emails in one place, be able to view them online or on my phone, and a much faster process of dealing with them.

I’ve now set all email accounts to get delivered to outlook, which was as easy as looking at the gmail help page, and the good thing for me is that wherever i access them they are updated in the other areas, so i’m always up to date. Its also nice to be able to copy and paste info in the same program, and i like just deleting emails safe in the knowledge they are still in gmail for searching.

On the email basis, this was a really nice system which might be useful for you too – http://lifehacker.com/software/top/geek-to-live–empty-your-inbox-with-the-trusted-trio-182318.php

Another thing i wanted to keep on top of is to add useful contacts to a central database as they come in. For some reason i used to tag everything that came in with the view to one day i’ll add all that to my contact databases. That day never came, and its just easier to add them straight away to already setup address books in outlook.

Setup filters in gmail to tag, and outlook to read. Filters are a great thing so you can only read stuff you want to. I do use folders to keep things organised as opposed to tags, which may be fairly pointless as everything is searchable, but its a learnt process, and makes track history easy, when i need to check back on bigger projects.

Thinking Rock & Getting Things Done

For me, this is a great piece of software which makes the whole GTD process nice and easy.  Its taken time to implement in a way that really works for me  (Dubber introduced me to it about 3 years ago), but if you’re someone who has a multitude of roles, or creates a lot of ideas, then a system like g.t.d is a lot easier than trying to keep track of them in your head.

The basic premise is that everything has a next action associated with it to move it forward. If that next action will take you less than 2 mins do it ..always.. without fail. If its not then process it (which means either defer it, delegate it, or add it to your next action list tagged in context and topic). Whichever one it basically means that its out of your head and safe in a system that works.

For me i just add anything that needs doing to Thinking Rock and then process all the thoughts in the weekly review, though like i say the way you use the system changes over time. As long as you keep to it (a learning curve in itself), your headspace and productivity improves massively. For some people this isn’t needed, and it seems its more commonly used in business, but from my experience creatives often have so much to do and self manage on top of their own creative practices, jobs and lives, that a system that addresses it, is definitely worth a try/read.

Dubber explains it a lot better than me here – http://newmusicstrategies.com/2007/11/26/best-software-ever/

One Note

Again it pains me that this comes from microsoft but its really useful with outlook and the gtd system as you can create virtual notebooks, link stuff easily, move text, pics, vids, audio, etc around the pages. I really like it for project reference material and sketching stuff out.

Thinking Rock for Mobile

I think this is another pc only thing, but is great for capturing your thoughts to add and process in thinking rock. A godsend and a free program for anyone who wants to take  thinking rock out on their mobile.

Music Collection

Being a dj, this deserves/will get a section in itself, but basically Traktor, Scrobbling and music navigation was the reason, alongside having a kind of flow of music, so that the music collection evolves and dynamically feeds into promos, reviews, radio shows, and various gigs.

This started from when i moved over to cdjs. I had hundreds of vinyl records, and a fair amount of tracks i’d dj from compilation cds, so the first task was to sample, edit, save them all to the computer, and then to burn them all to cd, naming each one so the case would be correct.

Now i’ve got traktor, which means i can play anything, as mp3, though the key time consumer is that if i want to see what i’m playing, the id3 tags need to be correct, which with thousands of records, most of which arent tagged at all,  has been a labour of love. Ultimately though this will allow me to do a lot more with djing and respond more fluently in the forthcoming gigs in more diverse environments.

There’s a lot i’ve learnt through trial and error over these last months, which might be useful, so i’ll try and blog them in short top tip fashion for anyone who might be in the same boat.

2008 – A (sort of) round up of last year..

marcreck » 04 January 2009 » In Djing » No Comments

or as much as i can remember off the top of my head anyway!..Don’t normally do these, but it feels a good thing for me to do as they say it’s always good to see where you’ve been before deciding where you are going to go.

Djing saw gigs most weekends ranging from Birmingham Opera in a warehouse to Atomic Jam at the que club, from botanical gardens to the custard factory and learning a whole host along the way. I’m also up to 5 residencies now with some of my favourite events in brum, and even started a new radio show for brum based Rhubarb Radio, all culminating in an end of year best local dj award from the Night Times!

Even got a certificate

On the music side, i saw my first two soundtracks, one for a new vibes dance on film piece and a festival and events dvd. I’ve also got to grips with production and arranging side of things, and feel a lot more comfortable with guitar, vocal, djembe and scratching, writing an array of styles in the search for my own sound.

We weren't allowed cameras during the performance

On the events front, Project X Presents delivered 2 awesome events, starting the year with a small X-lab, and in september, after going through around 30 venues, transforming a working mens club into a digitial distopian vision of the future.

Performers at X

Mr Elephant Presents delivered a range of community based events, ranging from afamily day with workshops, live music, and kids activities, through to blowing up the hare and hounds for mr elephant’s 1st birthday bash with mask making, kazoo’s, live & djed music, and the midnight parade. We were also asked to host rooms at events such as the longest day festival, whilst collaborating on live events such as the consider it done debut showcase. The heffalump collective also came together to Celebrate Birmingham’s Underground with poodle parades, stalls, 12 piece percussion jams with beatboxers and scratch djs, interactive performance art and amazing dj and vjs sets. Following that 2008 also saw the launch of a little mr elephant night called Party Rockin Mammals, and even an award from the night times as runner up for best small promotions. All the events have packed out each venue, generated great reviews and postive feedback, and in the majority of cases created highest bar takes for venues and paid opportunities and/or substantial exposure for participating artists.

Poodle Parade at Mr Elephants Midnight Parade

As none of the above are (unfortunately) ways to generate sustainable income, also on the cards was a music educator course via access to music, in order to teach custom made courses in music and djing. I also completed an events management course, in the hope to qualify me for the big festival events, attended a seminar or two, and gained invaluable experience with shadowing various workshop sessions in order to take my music, and djing technologies into cross artform workshops for educational and community settings.

A drop in workshop at our Mr Elephant family event

The big community based idea which began as Workshop of the World on Mr Elephant site has become Share to Create, which was made a reality after receiving great interest from people who can build it, various partner orgs who can deliver the outreach and services. 9 months in the making and support from some amazing people in brum has seen the idea grow into something really special, and we are currently applying for 4ip funding. Watch this space.

Atomic Jam

And then of course there was all the rest of life. The good times with friends, the inspiring gigs, the creative sessions which inspire each time we do them.

Here’s to 2009. May it bring all that you wish for.
