Don John @ The Rep – Feb 2008

marcreck » 26 February 2009 » In Bloglife » No Comments

Last night we went to see the final night of the latest knee high theatre production – Don John, which is as the name suggests based on the classic story of Don Juan. It was quite spectacular in a lot of ways, with great performances, set, and music, though both of us weren’t blown away by the story itself.

It was particularly good for me as it’s been a while since i’ve been to the theatre. It was also nice to read up on knee high theatre who are an exceptional theatre company by all accounts, and who detail their experience on their website, which gave a good insight into their process.

A lovely night out, and will def be going to see one of their performances again……just not that one. :)

AV with a DJ a VJ, 2 masks and a message

marcreck » 20 February 2009 » In Djing » No Comments

For a while now i’ve been wanting to create and tour a proper dj/vj set with narrative and performance, and while we’ve had a few outings and opportunities, we’ve only really scratched the surface.

Alonside the music productions, the first attempt from a dj perspective was my fear and love mixtape back in 2006. Then the Mr Elephant mixtapes in 2007, and the opening of the que club set. At the big project x presents shows, i had the opportunity to work on multi-media sets working with the themes of the heroes journey, and digital distopia, and for the peace not war event at Drop Beats Not Bombs i got the opportunity to collaborate with bham dance collective, lisa wetton, and vj chromatouch, to create a narrative about war. All of which has inspired further collaborative projects, and taught new approaches into creating something which has the spotanaity of djing and vjing, and the structure of narrative.

With all the projects, proposals, and website developing, i’ve been feelin far away from the creative side of life, so i was most chuffed to have an inspiring hour long facebook chat with The Lab’s very own Tony Coleman today. His name sounds like a sports broadcaster, but he is in fact, one of the most innovative vjs in the uk, currently touring resident with Edirol and Cream…a top bloke with bags of creativity to boot.

We first met at the Project X Presents, when Leon Trimble drafted in his a list of vjs for the 3rd big project x presents show. We hit it off through a shared love of breaks, and an interest in political issues, and innovative use of djing, vjing and new technology.

Next connection was at a recent Plaza 2008 show, where Tone used my journey to the edge of somewhere mix to demonstrate his vjing with new edirol products, and since then we’ve spoke about taking something on the road. We’ve both been made masks, and like the idea of dj and vj being part of the performance, so this should see a lot more integration on that side of things. There’s also talk of playing a visual harp, and using a whole host of technology on both the audio and visual side.

Well now, (after that facebook chat!?) we’ve got a beginning and hopefully a more defined end in which to start basing the middle around. The theme is based on that speech in Network, Zeitgeist, Bill Hicks, and it ties in with the proposed Share to Create ethos, and forthcoming Z day on March 15th, though with Tony’s forthcoming german tour,  and our current commitments, we’re approaching it as an ongoing project set for the summer.

Inspired by X, Exploring the Y, to get to the Z.

Mr Elephant Radio Show #3 – 14th February 2009

marcreck » 14 February 2009 » In Djing, Radio Shows » No Comments

This copied from our Mr Elephant website

It’s Valentines day, and so we’re on a suitable love theme with Mr Elephant’s Falling in Love Mixtape & some live footage of Rich Batsford performing some of his forthcoming album Valentine Court @ a packed out gig at the Old Joint Stock back in 2007.

Marc Reck is your host, and you can listen again, dload the show and comment all from this post. Artist tracklistings are also below to aid in finding music you like via last fm. This will be our last Friday night show as Marc’s own djing commitments mean we will be moving to a different day. As soon as a suitable slot is available we’ll be back with the show.

P.s Apologies for not posting the other shows. These last 3 were the only ones that were recorded. When we return we will record and post each show.

P.P.S – Re the audio quality of the gig, it was recorded on binaurul microphones as opposed to any sort of live feed. While it doesn’t sound too bad, it obviously doesn’t do justice to the rich sound that rich creates.

Feb/March Breaks Reviews

marcreck » 12 February 2009 » In Charts, Djing » No Comments

Here’s this month’s breaks reviews for the Feb/March Issue of the Night Times

(updated post) and the scanned in copy and readable version

Funkanomics – Circle Kid (Funkanomics Remix) – (Rocstar Records)

A huge party party breaks track which manages to keep you gripped from start to finish, with really well edited drums, a proper party bassline, great vocals from Nine Lives the Cat, and really cool edits all the way through. Awesome release from Rocstar due out on April 6th 2009 and plenty of variety and funk on the remixes.

Paul Lyman – Breakthrough (10 Rapid Remix) – (Dusted Breaks Records)

This one’s due for release on the 20th April 2009, and looks set to be a big crossover track. With a huge Miles Dyson esque bassline which feels dirty (and slightly wrong), and an array of marching drums, expect to be feeling this on breaks, electro and/or techy dancefloors near you soon.

The Prodigy – Warriors Dance – (Take me out the hospital records)

I’ve been waiting for this track to come out ever since hearing it on an mp3 recording of their gig at the rainbow warehouse in may 2008. The Prodigy are back in full effect with their new album “Invaders Must Die”, and for me, this is one of the two stand out tracks (with Thunder being the other). The vocal on this is so infectious, and the drop really goes off on the dancefloor with it’s old school style beats and grimy synth bassline. This release, quite simply, rocks!

Run Riot – Charge – (Charge Ep) – (We Are Live Recordings)

Another one set for the crossover floors, this release from Tom Young is set to blow up when it gets its release on May 25th 2009. Run Riot has only been in existance since January, and this debut ep should see the essex born producer see big things by the end of 2009 with its techy edged roll beats, filthy basslines and uplifiting synth layers. Watch out for the charge!

Alphadrive – Chronos – D-Form Records

Since forming in October ’07, Alphadrive have quickly gained a reputation for being one of the freshest live dance acts around. Showcasing “a perfect fusion of danceable dub, breaks and electronica” and with an already impressive gig list, these guys are definitely one to watch on the live breaks front. This track features an infectious vocal, some slickly produced beats and bass, a nice driving gated build, and some lush breakdowns. Reminds me of a cross between Hybrid & Subsource. For more info check out www.myspace.com/alphadrive

Dj Icey feat Nikki Carrabello – Glance (v2.2 Mix)- Zone Records

I love a lot of what Dj Iceys put out, and as a dj he can mix it up and rock it out. This release is testament to his diversity and looks set to be igniting breaks and dubstep floors alike. Probably best put as a breaks track with a dubstep drops, this track features lots of edits, grimy wobble bass, alongside some nicely edited male vocals, lush female vocals and a spectrum of beats – Good bassy system required.

Irie Vibes @ Party Rockin Mammal Sessions # 3

marcreck » 10 February 2009 » In Dj Gigs, Djing, Events, Mr Elephant Presents » No Comments

(This posted from our Mr Elephant website)

Just a quick shout to the roots and mammals for a memorable party rockin mammal sessions, and to our special guest Olbi Iyah who dropped a great selection of reggae, dancehall and ragga.

Olbi Iyah

Our camera ran out immediately after that shot, but Laura kindly captured some of the mayhem when our resident was rinsing the breaks and jungle.

Marc by Laura Louise

Next Party Rockin Mammal Sessions will feature funk from Olly Badaboon, and swing from Marc Reck, along with breaks from both, and drum & bass / jungle at the end.

Liams back too :) – April 7th 2009

First gig of the new year

marcreck » 01 February 2009 » In Dj Gigs, Djing » No Comments

(aside from the N.Y gig) was at the legendary live music venue the Adam and Eve in digbeth with two of my favourite bands – The Hidden Half, and Mr Elephant favourites, the mighty Mama Matrix.

Adam and eve flyer

I used to go to the adam and eve pretty regularly when friends Steve and Beppa used to run their weekly live gigs down there. It was always a place where you were guaranteed a nice vibe, good music, and easy going late hours all in a nice warm space.

I haven’t been for over 4 years and even though i’ve played with mama matrix a few times now, i wasn’t sure what to expect, or what kind of crowd there would be imagining there’d be a mix of ages and tastes, and potentially a lot of people who preferred live music environments to the club dj type gigs.

With that in mind I’d got myself a scratch based set together for the first hour to build up from the spanish acoustic sound of Hidden Half, into the raucous balkan energy of Mama Matrix. For the second hour i thought it’s either going to be drum and bass set, or bham opera after party style, and by 8pm, thanks to my girlfriend and a final practice session the nerves had dissapated.

When i got there, the nerves started again, as it was absolutely rammed, with no space for decks, and no extra leads or tables to put them on. We cobbled together a table out of beer crates and a bass amp, and managed to squeeze it all into the corner next to the in house mixer.

First up were the hidden half, who bought some beautiful spanish vibes to this little corner of digbeth. 3 multi-talented musicians make up the half, with Amrita on vocals and flute, Paulo on percussion and vocals, and spanish guitar from Mark (who i’ve not met but was suitably mesmorised by his playing!)

Next up was my first set which consisted of my 2nd live outing with the scratch deck and an intro on the mic. We took it from reggae to quantic style house, and it went down better than i could have hoped for, leaving a nice warm connection with the crowd.

Mama Matrix onstage soundcheck was in similar diy fashion and prompted a couple of extra tunes which provided perfect flow and a nice feeling of working as a team, which as a dj is always nice.

When the mics were all working they launched into a “stonking” set, with each member adding their own charm and personality into the mix. Daz with his charismatic charm and powerful vocal/guitar delivery, ann with her mind blowing violin technique and expressive warmth, mark with his innovative tuba basslines, and freestyle ability, and mike with his awesome drumming, and range of mouth pieces (i saw 3 but could only name the kazoo!) Joels guantanamo bayray character and awesome lead guitar playing was unfortunatly not able to perform due to some unfortunate news, but the sound that the other members produced meant they managed to pull it off in a big way, leaving no one sitting in the adam’s main room, (and making it very difficult to get to the toilet or bar while they were playing!)

My second set started with Django Reinhart, picked up through senser, and was littered with ska, funk, indie dance and soul, and i even got to drop 2 drum and bass tunes in there, and do a bit more scratching. The response was amazing, and as i didnt settle on one genre for more than 2 tunes, every seemed approving and there was some lovely comments from some musicians i think  in brum.

The venue has asked us back to do it again, which would be great as the mamas always attract a nice crowd, and i’ve been asked back to dj again from the lovely manageress Katie, so lookin forward to more djing with bands in the coming months.
