Audio Soundtrack for Secret City Markets Project

I’ve had a fair bit of audio editing and soundtrack for community projects work over the last 12 months but havent been posting much of it. This recent one for Secret City arts was one where i learnt a lot about the history of our markets so thought it’d be a good one to share.

Pyn & Mandy pictured above are secret city arts although there are many collaborators and people involved from local groups to professional artists. Mandy’s artform is writing and Pyn’s is drama & mask and you can read about their work on their site – www.secretcityarts.com

This project was exploring the history of our markets in Birmingham and i was asked to created audio piece from various accounts and audio recordings that they had recorded of people who worked in the market, used the market and of the market itself. There was a relatively short timescale and lots of audio material to edit, but with a clear order based on the 800 hundred year old timeline, and a song written by mandy & a community group – which provided the narrative theme throughout, which was sung live in the performance.

You can hear the audio piece below, though bear in mind its not a live recording so at the performance there would be group singing over the song parts and projections, and live performance from a local special needs community group to accompany the sounds. Nevertheless its gives a good idea and an overview of the history of our markets.

After the performance there was cake and talking with everyone involved and everyone who’d come to see it. It was really nice to have the opportunity to people who lived at times described in the soundtrack and get a deeper picture of what it was like.

My mum came out for the performance and remembered some of the places in described in the soundtrack via her mum, and had the chance to chat to the participants and relive some special memories. The cake that Mandy had made was pretty special too >

It was a lovely day and they’ve since been featured on Carl Chinn’s radio show, the back to backs and have a few performances left in the city. You can check out more of their work at their site here
