Journey to the Edge Of Somewhere

marcreck » 18 August 2008 » In Djing, Mixes, Music » 9 Comments

Finally after almost a year, i decided to finish a breaks mix i worked on last year, which was showcased at our last big Project X Presents event in November, and which was based on the Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey.  It was also a set that i reopened the Que Club with, and part of it was featured in my first review at Custom Made, so as you can imagine it feels really good to finish it!

I made this when i was 7 years old

It was ony waiting for one mix, but there was nothing in my box that seemed to fit, so i’ve left it for…..well for months now.

Last night though, i managed to finish it by trying a couple of new tracks with it, which i think fits the narrative perfectly, and by 6am, i had a couple of covers and the tracklisting all done. (The cover incidentally is something i made at school when i was 7!)

So for your listening “pleasure” may I present – “Journey to the Edge of Somewhere”. I really hope you enjoy it, and i also hope you can see some of the hero’s journey in it.

It’s not supposed to be pretty, for obvious reasons, and music wise its based around the heavier end of breaks and drum and bass, as similar to my Fear and Love Mix, it is designed to work on an underground dancefloor, as well as have a narrative.

I didnt have room to put the stages on the cd cover, though i do want to, so until then, here they are for your reference.

  • The Ordinary World

  • The Call to Adventure

  • Meeting The Mentor

  • Crossing The Threshold

  • Approach to the Innermost Cave

  • The Supreme Ordeal

  • The Road Back

  • The Shadow Challenge

  • The Freedom To Return

  • The Reward

And here’s the tracklisting.

The Tracklisting

I wanted to host it on my server, so downloading it would be quick for anyone that wants to, and the file size is only 33 meg, so should be fairly quick.

The only downside, is that it wont tell me how many people have downloaded it, so if you do download it, or listen to it online, all i ask is that you drop me a comment, (even its just “downloading/listening now”)  so i can get some idea of how many people are interested to hear it.

Many thanks, i hope you enjoy it, and i really appreciate your comments :)

Mr Elephant’s “Journey Round The World” Mixtape

marcreck » 08 October 2007 » In Djing, Mixes, Music » No Comments

I’ve just finished my latest mix for the Mr Elephant Radio Podcast, and its turned out well

Its 1 hour long, and 21 tracks of great music from around the world, from a multitude of genres, all mixed up in a story …of Mr Elephant’s travels.

BarcelonaIt’ll quite different from what you will have heard before, and is the other side of music i like to dj, inspired by a recent set at the Custom Made/Dj Derek event, and also from our friends at Jam Jah and Jibbering who hosted the Mr Elephant room 2 on rotation.

Please show love to the artists by clicking their links/buying an mp3. Its hoped that it’ll help share/promote music and artists, but if you are the rights holder to any of the music, and would like a track to be removed from the mix, please email me and i’ll happily oblige.

Otherwise I’d really like to know if you can hear any story in it, or any feedback you may have, so please feel free to drop us a comment.

Either way i hope you enjoy listening to it as much as i do.

Here’s the link to download or stream

And here’s the tracklisting :

Mr Elephant’s Journey Round the World

1. The mighty Thievery Corporation start us off. A Washington DC-based production and DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton and their supporting artists. Their music can be characterized as downtempo/electronica with influences of dub, acid jazz, indian classical and brazilian styles fused together with a lounge aesthetic, and they really know how to produce bass!

2. Then it’s to my home city of Birmingham with the inspiring Friendly Fire Crew, reggae collective, featuring the talented Paradox on the vocals and Robin Giorni on the production, with this proper track called “Web Of Deceit”

3. Down into the the south of Spain we find the beautiful voice of Yolando Rayo, with an equisite traditonal salsa track “Salsa Con Sabor”

4. Then its to the bright lights and big show tunes of Broadway, with Catherine Zeta Jones blasting out her rendition of “All That Jazz” from the musical Chicago (reedited for full dancefloor effect by me)

5. Thrown onto the streets of London with this dirty classic track from Noonsday Underground

6. Going Deeper into the capital for the inspired fusion of Tricky (with great vocals from Martine), with their seminal track “Black Steel” from the album Maxinquaye.

7. India speaks with the amazing vocal talent of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, taken from my favourite soundtrack of the 90’s – Natural Born Killers

8. Staying East we get treated to the combined musical skills of Shankar and the Epidemics.

9. Then lush African Marimba sounds from Batanai Marimba with a track called Shangara.

10. To the streets of Barcelona is where we find the Minimal Acoustic Band, and their track “Saraha”. Mainly using traditional didgeridoos from Nepal, and steel pans from Jamaica their fusion is/was a highlight from the Catalunyan streets.

11. Then its a quick trip back to the U.K to catch the hugely talented fusion that is Nitin Sawhney, with this title track from his Beyond Skin Album.

12. Then were off all the way across the globe to New Zealand with a brief stopover in Australia and a classic track from Crowded House

13. Over to now Europe for two short vists. One is to France to see the excellent French Hip Hop Sounds of Nuttea

14. And then over to Germany to check out a light hearted Dauerfisch

15. A business trip to Japan allows us to let our hair down and catch the pure funk of Major Force, with this wicked track taken from Thievery Corporation’s “Outernational Sound Mix Album”

16. Then its over to the west coast with a little bit of deck skills from Dj Shadow with this bit of Walkie Talkie,

17. and then NWA give us a slice of Compton life with the classic “Fuck Da Police”

18. Manu Chao is a Latin folk singer of Galician origin, fusing all sorts of …well you probably heard of him too.

19. Over to the continent of Africa to visit Mozambique for a Maputo based multi generational collective. Mabulu are one of a number of nu-generation African bands balancing dance music, traditional roots sounds, and the verbal acrobatics and conscious social lyrics of rap and hip-hop. This track is called Aids.

20. Then of course, The Pink Panther from North American composer Henry Mancini

21. And to bring us back home, we haved the inspirational soundtrack esque Barry Adamson, with the very cool “Jazz Devil”

Stayed tuned for the Hero’s Journey in breakbeat and drum n bass form..Coming soon.

Mr Elephant Radio Show 1 – Parts 2 & 3

marcreck » 25 May 2007 » In Djing, Mixes, Music » No Comments

Part two of the Mr Elephant show was the fear and love mix which you can find further down, so the third hour was 2 exclusive recordings from our first Rockfall Event at the Custard Factory back in February 2006, from Floridian Deck Maestros, J-Break & Agent K, when they headlined the launch party. First mix is heavy breaks. 2nd mix is heavy drum n bass! It was, in the words of Boogie Dave,….”heavy!”

Because they are exclusive recordings i can’t post them to download, as they can only be streamed. Instead however here is a video of the night, starring all the Rockfall headliners, and Barnard Hobbit :) Check this Video link to view. Comments as always are most welcomed.

1st Review by – Sarah Wilkinson

“A journey of contrasting styles and musical vigour that’s perfectly mixed, brilliantly chosen and superbly thought out.
The ppl I did play it to, once I got home, agreed – they’ve been privvy so far to a completely different ‘Marc Reck’ and this, as it did me, hit them by storm.

But, what a journey, all tied in at the end by that amazing Sigur Ross track which brings the whole ‘music’ experience to a huge close and leaves you somewhat in awe. I listened to it with Jack as we drove thru all weathers down the M54. It isn’t that it “just” makes good driving music, even though the double edge thing was that while physically travelling on one journey I was listening simultaneously to another journey. Jack leant forward at one point and turned up the bass and said “God yes, this is it this is” (to get a reaction out of him is pretty amazing and thats the first time I’ve seen him actually moved by what he was hearing).

After that, I must’ve listened to it another 5 times during the course of the weekend.. in all sorts of different states. Its pretty much had the same affect on everyone.. so it can’t be just me reading things into it. Everytime I finished listening to it, someone came into the house asking to play it again. Even Valentino Canziani has never been played in my living room that much and consecutively too. Surly that speaks volumes about its quality!”
