Drop Beats Not Bombs @ The Que Club

Despite a few setbacks last night was an amazing experience, and massive shouts to the whole of the drop beats crew for making it happen!

Que Club Drop Beats Not Bombs

On arrival there was some major holdups from the sound company, who seemed  to have left things far too late, (or underestimated the sheer scale of the event). Boogie as you can imagine was not best pleased at their timescales, so was doing his upmost to get things rolling. After a delayed soundcheck for the London Breakbeat Orchaestra, the head of the soundcompany came and soundchecked the decks. Again to be fair very unprofessionally, i.e starting a big breaks track over the whole p.a and then going off with no communication to those of us in the booth. Anway gripes aside, when we’d realised he wasnt coming back and all was well i started my set with that opening track i’d been working on. I really loved playing the set, and despite the tensions in the air, settled in straight away. I was so high up (djing right about where the eye shaped thing in the middle of the picture is) i wasnt sure if people could see me bouncing around up there, but as the floor filled the atomosphere grew richer and the connections grew quickly.

In terms of that big narrative and show that we’d planned, well that too was fraught with unforseeable hindrances. The drummer as i mentioned dropped out at last minute due to food poisoning. Likewise the head vj Tom Syzergy also had food poisoning so Vj Chromatouch had cover the visual co-ordination of the night, so didnt even get to vj at the set. Both of us were pretty gutted about that especially after seeing the screens. On the performance side, the performance artists were fantastic and really got the crowd interactive and noticeably built the storyline of their characters. One of the belly dancers however had had some bad news so agreed they should perform at a later set.

Despite all that we gave it loads and the reopening set seemed to go down a storm, as there was plenty of positive feedback afterwards from peers and friends alike. There were many highlights for me, but i guess one of the standout ones were playing The atomic Jam tune aka The bells, playing that complex section – drum & bass into Our Prayer into the Lawgiverz and into the prodigy bit, the reaction to my debut tracks (and how they sounded on the big pa) playing all that jazz when they samba central setup was delayed, and getting to drop such a mix of huge tunes on such a monumental stage and for such an occassion :)

The production at times throughout the night was amazing in the main room, and despite the delays, the sound systems sounded great. The crew were exceptional all rising to the occassion and dealing with everything as they needed to. All around the venue, there was quality stuff on. Highlights for me were the mighty Subvert room seeing bands like Mama Matrix and 1 eye witness, the broken minds having a ridiculously bass heavy soundsystem in, (with extra speakers just in case they were needed!) and the jibbering crew rocking out with a wide range of stuff.

Boogie Dave was as ever, the legend and it was great to see him in his element once again. Not only had he sorted out his customary backstage booze for everyone involved, but had also gone to the trouble of getting custom t-shirts made up for everyone that played which i thought was real nice. The security were unfortunately far on top and were throwing people out left right and centre including artists. There were also a few emotionally testing times along the way, but despite all that, the magic of the event and the que didn’t dampen proceedings at all.

All in all, im pleased to say the reopening of the que club was a magical night, and one i wont ever forget. Big ups to all who made it happen.
