Reckommended Records – April / May 2012

Submitted by on April 24, 2012 – 14:46No Comment

A bumper pack of (at least) 20 tracks of different genres that i’m really feeling as we merging april and mays charts. Some free download and some forthcoming promos. All highly recommended.

Downtempo / Electronica

TN1 – Wake Up – Filter – Out at the end of April this one is a debut for Bristol artist TN! on diverse Macedonia based label Filter Recordings. Really interesting deep techno Leftfield based electronica & well worth checking out.

Ikon (aka Elliot Ireland) – Mogul Modal & Calling You – Free Downloads – Two beautiful tracks from label owner of Jalepeno records. Tracks are all very soundtrack esque with really powerful vocals. Found his page via skewiff and all his tracks are free.

Hunab Ku – Venn Diagram – Filter – More idm or breaks this track, but on a really strong and interesting self titled ep released on Filter. From Downtempo and cinematic through to interesting grooves like this one. Out on May 25th 2012

Hip Hop / Swing Hop / Funky Breaks

Joe Driscoll – Mixtape Champs (Don Hendicutz 93 Mix) – Free Download – Dope free summertime funky hip hop breaks with a great vocal.

Skewiff – Most of his Soundcloud Account – Free Downloads – Far too many gems to just pick one and he gives much away for free. Always crowd pleasing and seriously funky remixes and productions i just recommend you head over to his page and listen to as much as you have time for. 4 reckommended tracks to start with would be “Lets have scratch for breakfest” – his remixes of “Dont rock the boat” featured on his new electro swing album (free til 18th May) and Amy Whinehouse’s “You know I’m no good” & Suited and Booted.

Glitch Hop

Johnny Pulse feat. Bass Nancho – Swamp Wobble – Bulabeats – Can’t find a preview of this and its an included free track as part of his forthcoming back to the future ep, but i love it. Really original sounds and (this track sits somewhere between Glitch Hop &)

Sedge Warbler – Welcome to the Universe Remix Ep – Skanky Panky – Huge Glitch Hop release from 2010 is back and its even bigger! – Really loved the whole album when it came out, but these remixes – particularly the k-lab and Sixam remixes are just immense. Phat funk fuelled bass driven party rockin glitch hop goodness. Out very soon

William Breakspear feat Ashley Slater – Avatar (Jazz Magz Remix) – Rocstar  – Phat driving glitch hop breaks here. Dark and disjointed but driving forward with menace. Forthcoming in May

Dj Shadow – Walkie Talkie (SPR All-Stars Remix) -Free Download – Free remix download from liverpool label Skanky Panky which takes the original to places i’ve wanted to hear it

William Breakspear vs The Strangeways – Skanky Panky Tune – Free Download  – Another funky ass glitch hop remix from mr breakspeare. First became aware of WB and featured one of the 1st reviews for this section with his release on rocstar back in 2010, but im loving these remixes on skanky panky and this is probably my favourite ive heard from him thus far. Such a great tune all carried by a massive rolling glitch hop bassline, quality reggae vocals and some solid dancehall riddims.

William Breakspear – Bardcore (Album) – Rocstar -Two i particularly like of the new album at Sidestep  & Womp Rat – Nice phat and filthy bass led Glitch Hop but there’s various styles to suit various tasted – Out in 27th May on Rocstar

Moombahton & Ghetto House

Gato Preto – Dinheiro Negro (The Bumps Remix) – Free Download – Wicked dancehall / cumbia inspired track which also fits nicely into the Moombahton & Ghetto House stables. This remix is my favourite though theres plenty to choose from on the 2 part release all

Dubstep

Heavenly Father – Moan & Lie – Free download – Ryan Sweeten aka Heavenly Father puts out all his tracks for free dloads, and theres plenty of great stuff in there especially if you’re into your glitchy stuff or bass explorations. This one is the most recent and one i particularly like. Deep dark and brooding & a free dload.

Freq Nasty – Dread At the Controls (Greg Reve Mix) – Muti Music – More phat bass driven goodness coming out from the dreadlocked one. The mix i like is the Greg Reve Remix, although ive been reediting it live to keep the driving bass that drops in on the 1st drop, and the whole ep gives plenty of ammo for those that like to mix up their bass genres. A good example is Freq’s new dj mix out on his soundcloud which has some wicked tracks in there (& is highly recommended to be listened to on a decent bass system)

Tigerstyle – Ik Banere (Dub Sharma Remix) - Soldier Sound Records – Great ep this one, but its this remix which stands out for me, with some interesting glitched up dubstep whilst still keeping a feel of the original via the amazing indian vocal. Taken from the forthcoming album “Digi-Bhang” and set for release on May 24th 2012.

Breaks / Nu Jungle

King Yoof ft Jah Mirikle – Warrior Sound (Gold Remix) – Sub Slayers – The consistently excellent King Yoof realease this awesome E.p from the mighty SubSlayers label on May 4th, but its already blazing floors all around the country. I particularly like to play the Gold remix (a local lad causing big waves at the mo) and -you can hear it from that link above or on my set a couple of weeks ago on the Funktion One (though i did edit it a fair bit live with cuepoints & looping).

Rennie Pilgrim – Respect is due – TCR – Absolutely love this track. Will be featured as part of his forthcoming album i think which also features his new track called defy with some awesome remixes. This though has a beautiful old school break, and then a wicked half time deep dubsteppy bass drop. This tracks is out now, and will be on Rennie Pilgrem’s forthcoming retrospective album ‘Now And Then’ which will be released in the summer

Goldie – We Are The Core – Free Download – Another big tune with real old school flavours and a wicked rolling break. Nu Jungle speed with loads of great changes and a 96 feeling. Free dload from mixmag scloud.

Techno

Simon Owen – Zenith EP – Mutate to Survive – Great release here from another Birmingham lad – Simon Owen’s drops a couple of deep brooding meaty rolling techno cuts with just the right amount of groove to keep it funky. Both are great available now :)

Drum & Bass

Loadstar – Terror Drone/Second Skin – Free Download – Two big free dloads from Loadstar via his fbook page. Hovering between heavy techy drum & bass and drumstep and keeping the uplifting breakdowns that he does so well.

Live set

Recently posted one of my favourite Leftfield tracks on my wall and had a headsup for a live set from 2000 at Homelands. Heres the link to download for anyone that wants a copy.
