Party Rockin Mammal Sessions 1st Birthday Review!

Mr Elephant Presents – Party Rockin’ Mammal Sessions 1st Birthday – 2nd October 2009

The Party Rockin’ Mammal Sessions have become synonymous with playing floor filling underground dancing music, guaranteed to make your tail feather shake, and a reliable way to find some of the best underground djs in the city.

Celebrating it’s 1st birthday, and final party at the Bulls Head, great vibes were in full effect, with balloons, kazoos (& those lighty up things) adorning a lovely and well up for it crowd, whilst superb sets were thrown down with celebratory style from Marc Reck, VJ Blendstate, DJ Lopan, & The Beat Suite, all of which kept the birthday mammals stomping with a dancefloor journey through hip hop, glitch-hop, funk, breaks, drum ‘n’ bass and jungle!

New residents, The Beat Suite, are a Birmingham-based duo, who can scratch, genre hop, and rock the party, joining the Mr Elephant collective at the 2nd Cinephonic. Comprising of Skeleton and Dolhasz, these two DJs began their journey at the venue filling (and much missed) Open Beats events alongside Skeleton’s residencies at Trigger. Now they host their own radio show live on rhubarb radio every Wednesday at midnight, and watch out for big things from the new 4 way partnership in 2010.

DJ Lopan was welcomed back with his record bag full of party breakbeat, and dirty electro, with some fine turnatablist skills, alongside fellow resident VJ Blendstate who delivered without doubt the finest visuals yet seen at the venue.

whilst resident sock-rocker Marc Reck once again brought his magic to the turntables with a massive crowd pleasing breaks and drum and bass set,

followed by The Beat Suite’s 2nd set of the night with some huge jungle which set the place on fire.

One of the 4 regular nights from the Mr Elephant collective, the next Party Rockin’ Mammal Sessions will be on Saturday 14th November. Sadly saying farewell to the Bulls Head, but happily taking up a new Saturday night residency at the Hare & Hounds, where it will be on rotation with Cinephonic every 2nd Saturday of the month (though the next Cinephonic will be on Friday Dec 11th for a xmas movie mashup!)

Look out for other nights belonging to the Mr Elephant family including Live and Free @ the Adam & Eve, (great live music til 4am for free!), the return on Intermix in 2010, the bi yearly festival style events, and of course the Mr Elephant radio show live on www.rhubarbradio.com every Monday evening from 6pm – 8pm.

More photos of the night can be found here

May / June Breaks Charts 2009

marcreck » 15 May 2009 » In Charts, Djing » No Comments

Here’s the breaks charts for the May/June issue of the Night Times

Update : Here’s the scanned in version, or click for a readable version here

JadellBreak to the Beat – Rocstar – This track is the first i’ve heard of Jadell, and i love it. Classic drum loops and rolling funky ass stabs. Perfect for dancing, great fun to scratch to, and all round feel good record, with plenty of changes to keep you locked all the way through. Break to the beat will be released on the 31st May 2009, with a one week online exclusive on beatport on 25th May.

Rob SparxFixed Up – Z Audio – The first track of his new album Trooper this is one great opener for a breaks set. Sounds like something awakening, and reminds me of one of my favourite progressive breaks mixes by Phil Kaye. After the intro, it rolls smoothly into a nice subby kick and line, with nice percussion, and sun kissed soundscapes, setting the scene to take your set wherever you choose. There’s a load of great tracks on the album, and a series of remixes to follow, (which if you’re a dubstep fan, you def need to check out.) Trooper is due to be released in May on Z Audio label, and you can catch Rob Sparx in brum at After Dark at the Que Club on 6th June.

Mr No HandsChuggy – No Handed Music – This is probably my favourite track to date from the producer (hands down ;) and one that sets off every dancefloor i’ve dropped it on. This was out back in January but i still play it at most opportunities, and its a great release which builds suspense and energy on the floor. Chuggy is an apt title, with a great rolling feel, some slick beats, choice rhythmical vocals and a proper nice “chuggy” bassline. Buy it on No Handed music now!

Rico TubbsParty Time (Splitloop Remix) – Menu Music – There’s a load of great Rico Tubbs remixes on this double remix ep – Knuckle Sandwich Remixed, and a host of styles to choose from, (electro, dubstep, breaks, fidget, acid house, drum & bass, etc). This track from Splitloop was one of my personal favourites, and has all the elements of a proper party breaks track (doing exactly what it says on the tin!) Knuckle Sandwich Remixed is set to drop in May/June on the mighty Menu Music Label, and is definitely one to check out whatever your style.

BBBLet The Bass – Standard Audio – Released back in March, this one has been tearing up the floors ever since, and is a huge tune, that will rinse out any breaks floor. Old school vocals, a charging bassline, some awesome edits, alongside some infectiously funky licks keep you locked from start to finish, and when it drops, it really drops, with some of the best build ups i’ve heard for a while. Big, big room breaks, and a must have record released on Standard Audio…and available now.

Black CanvasWe Fear Not (Ed Solo & Skool Of Thought mix) – Cool & Deadly – The new Black Canvas album aptly entitled Rise, is being released on Tayo & Skool of Thought’s Label , and features a whole range of styles, with some cool remixes from some big names, including Chase and Status and of course these boys. Ed Solo & Skool of Thought have all of their signature elements in full effect with this track..nice tightly produced breaks, those dirty bouncing basslines, their fine use of reggae guitar licks and sun kissed arpeggios, and all working nice and sweetly with Black Canvas’s choice rhythmical vocal melodies. Black Canvas album will be out Cool & Deadly in June 2009, and well worth checking out.

Party Rockin Mammal Sessions # 5 @ The Bulls Head

marcreck » 03 May 2009 » In Djing » No Comments

This copied from our Mr Elephant Website

We’ve been waiting a while to invite Russ back, and after hearing him on form last night, it was well worth the wait!

R Caine at our 5th Party Rockin Mammal Sessions

The Party Rockin Mammal Sessions have been going really well @ the Bulls Head as a bi monthly thing, so this month we started a monthly residencies (1st Friday of Every Month @ the bulls head, and so to kick us off we had (in our honest opinion), one of the best party rockin’ breaks djs in the midliands, Dj R Caine.

Russ caine

Since winning the pionneer dj comp, he’s gone on to host some big residencies at Archangel, City Breaks, Raw, and the Canal Club, before joining us Rockfall crew back in 2007, and then part of the Drop Beats Events. Russ also played one of the sets of the night at our Celebrate Birmingham’s Underground event on the beach in September last year.

Our resident Vj Blendstate was well on form with his visual multi screen magic, and our resident dj Marc Reck will be playing more of that monkey swing, before launching into the big breaks set, and the big drum & bass & jungle finale. Top Night, and big up to the security who let us end with that memorable finale.

On behalf of the whole elephant crew, we sincerely want to say cheers to any party rockin mammals who’ve been down, and for all the feedback as it has really helped shaped the night.

Next month we have Custom Made Custodian Mark Smallman! – Fri 5th June 2009

November/December Breaks Chart 2008

marcreck » 27 November 2008 » In Charts, Djing » No Comments

Here’s this months top 5 breaks reviews for the November/December edition of the Night Times

Update : Here’s the scanned in version and the readable version is here

Krafty Kutz – HappinessFinger Lickin’

A happy tune to kick us off this month, aptly titled happiness and with that signature A-skills funkiness, and Krafty Kutz bassline. One that looks set to put a smile on any dancefloor’s face.

Stanton Warriors – Blaze (Baobinga & Id Remix/SW Edit)Punks

Making a great track more dancefloor friendly with a nice dollup of darkness from the Baobinga & id camp. I prefer the stantons edit of their remix as its a little more rollin, but make sure you check out other version as they are pretty similar.

Noisia - Seven Stitches - Division Recordings

A wicked techno influenced breaker from the boys more known for their choice d+b cuts. This one’s been doing the rounds for a few months now, but still tearing up the dancefloors, whilst providing djs with a heavy bridges to other genres.

Double S - From Day (Cardpusher Remix)True Tiger

Technically dubstep but drop this in a peak time breaks set and watch it go off, This is a wicked track with plenty of cool edits and grimeiness for anyone who likes to mix it up.

Plump Djs – Listen to the Baddest - Finger Lickin’

Another crackin track from the phat ones with plenty of changes to keep things fresh and that rolling plump djs break.

Break The Box vs Lbj - No Rules (Joebot Mix) – Big Square Records

Heard this one on Joe’s soundcloud account this week and definitly deserves a chart. With it’s drivin beats and rolling acid synth lines this is a top remix from the spectrum resident. – Check out more at www.joebotdj.com

October Breaks Reviews

marcreck » 26 October 2008 » In Charts, Djing » No Comments

Here’s this month’s breaks reviews for the Night Times. Grab a free copy from your favourite local dancing establishments :)

Update : Here’s the scanned in version (with additional reviews from Bensun), and the readable version is here

Blind – Cut & Run – Crisp Biscuits – First up is another killer remix from the kings of booty breaks. Cut & Run might be a little bit naughty, but they’ve made 2 of the biggest crowd pleasers in my box, and pleased many a dancefloor with their cheekiness. This one samples one of my favourite Streets tracks, with a beautiful break down, nice buildup and the trademark cut & run nu-skool heaviness.

Stanton Warriors – Shifting Gears – Plump Djs – Finger Licking
– Staying on the more party breaks end of the spectrum we’ve got this remix from the Stantons. Its got a great vocal, and those trademark stanton style beats, basslines, and noise.. It might not be breaking barriers, but it is done very well.

Western Soul (Groove Diggers Remix) – Parker – Rocstar – Lee (Cut la Roc) sent this promo a while ago and it has its big release back in May, but as i wasn’t reviewing back then i thought i’d best get in quick. Probably my favourite out of the many Parker remixes, and definitely one of my favourite groove diggers remixes to date, this one build up all the way through, dropping some great techno style sounds, with a nice use of the 303 acid noise, whilst still keeping that funky breaks roll.

Loose Caboose (Bassbin Twins Remix) – The Electroliners – Twitch – This weeks classic breaks track is from 1993, and takes you back as soon as as you hear it, with its 303 acid noises, old school beats, snare rolls and horns. Reminds me of the old Raves, and early Que Club days and so one i’ll most definitly be dropping at the Atomic Jam que club return next month.

Braveheart Breaks (Scratch Record) – Dj Ritchie Rufftone – And finally this weeks “not strictly breaks track” is my first scratch record i recently bought from Jibbering. With plenty of sounds and those essential standard scratch noises, but done in an intuitive way, this is one piece of vinyl i’m trying to play with every day. Great for anyone who is getting into their scratching.

The Napt, Slyde, and Golticin & Quest reviews on the scan are by Bensun
